For American Activists Working Towards November Is A Beginning
In 2006 American voters delivered a significant body blow to the Bush regime but the invasions and occupations continue unabated. The mismanagement of tax payer money, the squandering of America's resources has intensified and the abysmal negative contribution to global warming continues to rain terror down on the American heartland. In 2008 the American people have an opportunity to deliver a knock out punch to the Bush regime and we should do everything in our power to be part of the energy delivering that KO blow.
What we must not forget now and what we must not forget in November is that many brutes have risen to their feet after being knocked out. If we are not aware that November 2008 is but a major stop in a longer journey then the regime will rise slowly to its feet and look to get back into the action. McCain may well be the sacrificial zombie for this round but look deep into the eyes of those who surround Bush. They are not acknowledging defeat of their collective dream. They are ready to take a fall in this round but they are not willing to be counted out.
Can we not see and hear McCain and Bush mimicking their California based Hollywood movie star friend: "We'll be back..."
2006 was a body blow, 2008 may be a knock down but 2010 and 2012 will tell the true tale of hope and change in America. We'll know much more by December. If the sound we hear is one of "great relief" it may well be followed by the deep breathing of a society returning to its rip van winkle roots. For while we should make no mistake in calling down the Bush regime for its national and international crimes so should we make no mistake in assessing the role of the American people (the electorate, the citizenry in general) in permitting the Bush regime to get this far so unscathed.
Surely it is not enough to stand up a few days here and there to state: Not in our name! Millions of people can scream "not in our name" at the top of their lungs but if they do not blockade the monster then it is all indeed done in their name... like it or not it is a simple fact. And therein lies the seed for longer term victory against the likes of the Bush regime. Therein lies the power of realizing that Iraq and Afghanistan and, yes, even New Orleans, was precisely in the name of the American people. If this can be acknowledged and accepted then transformed into a genuine "Never Again!" movement then perhaps a silver lining will be found and celebrated and enshrined.
The "not in our name" movement has failed. A "never again" movement must be birthed, nurtured and rooted into American culture.
2008 is but a station on the way to a peace that emerges from justice. Without justice there will never be peace. If the Bush regime actually escapes unscathed then justice will not have prevailed and so let it be clearly known that without that minimum level of justice there simply cannot be peace.
If we are still here in 2012 let us assess then how successful we were in '08. In the meanwhile let our incessant chant be "no justice, no peace" and let us never again sleepily nor sullenly allow the forces of imperial greed soil our name, whether American or simply human.
